College and University publications are a vital part of a school’s communication strategy, and our illustrators continue to receive interesting assignments. However, universities’ creative needs go beyond editorial to include permanent installations, promotional and advertising campaigns and interactive media.
Two recent projects by Rapp artists John Jay Cabuay and Daniel Hertzberg are excellent examples of high impact super-sized projects.
John Jay illustrated 5 portraits for the University of Arlington Texas’ “Maverick Speaker Series”, which provides a platform for today’s brightest minds to discuss ideas and solutions. It has featured the acclaimed voices of Bill Nye, Anderson Cooper, Jane Goodall and Seth Meyers. The images were used for a variety of media, from bus stop posters to web site headers.
Daniel was commissioned by Boston University’s Law School to create a colorful mural piece showcasing notable alumni. According to their dean, Maureen O’Rourke, these 11 graduates embody the “theme of advancing justice” and feature people such as the first African American graduate and Massachusetts’ first female attorney general. Daniel’s piece took a total of 6 weeks to make and is 13 feet tall by 25 feet wide. He was quoted by the University as saying, “the variety of color in this mural speaks for the diversity that they wanted to highlight.”
First year student Malwina Grzybowsk was quoted as saying the mural “adds a pretty nice, colorful life to the space.” Another student, Murat Dogruol, said “with all bright colors, it’s more refreshing; it will help people get their minds off something.”
