Rapp artists continue their tradition of success in the American Illustration Annual by placing seven artists in this year’s Annual. This juried competition is a highly sought after accolade for illustrators around the globe, showcasing the best in illustration carefully selected from thousands of submissions. Congratulations to our winners this year: David Brinley, Nigel Buchanan (two times!), Taylor Callery (two times!), John S Dykes, Anthony Freda, Daniel Hertzberg, Gwen Keraval, John Jay Cabuay, Yuta Onoda, and Robert Neubecker. Their winning entries are below:
Nigel Buchanan
Created for Opera News, this illustration accompanies an article about Boston Lyric Theater’s recent production of Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel, The Handmaid’s Tale.

Taylor Callery
This cover illustration was created for Harvard Magazine’s March-April edition in 2018. The article”The Mirage of Knowledge: Tom Nichols dissects the dangerous antipathy to expertise,” by Lydialyle Gibson analyzes the dangers of an unwillingness to learn in the American public discourse, inspiring Callery’s image.
“Listen Up” is a a large-scale mixed-media piece created for the American Gods Exhibition through Star Gallery NYC. The work was created using silkscreen, Aerosol, House Paint, Stencil, and Collage on Cradled Wood Panel.
John S Dykes
This illustration was created to promote John’s annual Open Studios event in Boston. He truly captures the feel of this interesting neighborhood through the architecture and people walking down the street.
John Jay Cabuay
John Jay created this illustration for a spread in Politico Magazine’s City Issue to accompany an article entitled, “To Be Young and Trumpy in D.C.”
Daniel Hertzberg
Daniel created his illustration for the University of Alberta New Trail Magazine’s article “Our Transhuman Future.” This article explores the implications of a future with artificial intelligence a billion times smarter than humans.
Gwen Keraval
Gwen created the new cover illustration for, “The Tornado” by Jake Burt to be published by Macmillan Children’s Publishing in October 2019. This is a great book for middle age children, with friendship, Da Vinci machine crafting, chinchillas, drawings and many more.
Robert Neubecker
Robert’s illustration “Privacy” was originally created for a New York Times article about the Equifax Data Breach. Although they ultimately ran another image of his, Robert liked the illustration so much that he finished it for his portfolio.
Yuta Onoda
Yuta’s mystical illustration titled, The Beast Player, was created for Macmillan Publishing
David Brinley
David’s painting is a Call for Entries poster created for the Philadelphia Sketch Club’s 10th Annual Open Juried Exhibition of Illustration in 2018. He was selected to create this piece after winning Best in Show the previous year for Phillustration 9.
Anthony Freda
Anthony’s sculpture, “The Alter to Guns” was created for The National’s OppArt series, which highlights work with themes surrounding political resistance.
